'Let's Talk About Europe': Focus on European defence policy

The second edition of “Let’s Talk About Europe” took place on 21 May 2025 at the Foyer Européen in Luxembourg, focusing on the question of a common European defense policy. Renowned experts discussed Europe’s security challenges as well as the opportunities and limits of deeper cooperation.

On 21 May 2025, the second edition of the ‘Let's Talk About Europe’ discussion series organised by Europa-Union Luxembourg took place at the Foyer Européen in Luxembourg City. The focus was on the question of a common European defence policy – which is even more urgent considering current geopolitical developments.

The EUL was able to attract high-profile speakers such as François Bausch (inter alia former Luxembourg Minister of Defence) and Erich J. Kornberger (Head of the International Affairs, Security, Europe and Development Department at the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Munich) to discuss this topic. They highlighted the security policy challenges in Europe and discussed the opportunities and limitations of increased military cooperation within the EU.

Both experts emphasised that an effective European defence policy is not in contradiction to NATO, but rather a necessary complement to it. Only through close coordination and the political will of all member states can Europe take on more responsibility for its own security policy.

During the subsequent discussion, the numerous guests were able to ask many questions and engage in debate with the speakers. The evening was moderated by our President Stefan Kohler. As last time, our Secretary Claude Franck introduced the topic.
