‘Let’s talk about Europe’: Spotlight on Rule of Law and Democracy in Europe

The Europa-Union Luxembourg launched its new discussion series Let’s talk about Europe with an evening dedicated to the rule of law and democracy. Experts discussed the resilience of these core values in Europe and engaged directly with the audience.

On 12 March 2025, the Europa-Union Luxembourg invited the public to the first edition of its new discussion series Let’s talk about Europe, held at the Foyer Européen in Luxembourg City. The evening focused on the European core values of the rule of law and democracy, examining their resilience and effectiveness across the EU member states.

Special guests included Anne Brasseur, former President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and former Minister, as well as York Albrecht, political scientist at the Institute for European Politics in Berlin. They explored various aspects of these core values and stressed the importance of a continuous commitment to safeguarding them.

Both speakers also described current attempts to undermine democracy and the rule of law in Europe. They emphasized the need for vigilance against anti-democratic movements and for consistent enforcement when these fundamental principles are violated.

Following the discussion, participants had the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with the experts. The evening was moderated by our Chair Stefan Kohler. Before the discussion, our Secretary Claude Franck provided an introductory overview of the topic, while Board Member Hana Reichert conducted an impromptu interview with the speakers, based on ad-hoc questions.

With its new series Let’s talk about Europe, the Europa-Union Luxembourg aims to address current European policy issues and foster open dialogue between citizens and experts. We would like to thank all participants for their keen interest and constructive contributions.
