As part of the event series “Let’s Talk About Europe!”, we invited participants on 22 January 2026, together with the Swiss Embassy in Luxembourg, to discuss the relations between Switzerland and the European Union. Three distinguished speakers took part in the event: Ambassador Benno Laggner, our member Charles Goerens MEP, and Florian Schmid, President of the Society for the Promotion of Cross-Border Cooperation (GFGZ), who had travelled especially from the border region between Switzerland and Germany. The venue was filled to capacity with 50 guests, including numerous Swiss citizens living abroad and members of the Europa-Union Luxembourg. JEF Luxembourg was also well represented.
The panel discussion was moderated by our chairman Stefan Kohler. The speakers addressed the new agreement between Switzerland and the EU, the current geopolitical situation, relations between Luxembourg and Switzerland, and other relevant topics. Around 2,000 Luxembourg citizens live in Switzerland, while approximately 1,400 Swiss nationals reside in the Grand Duchy, illustrating the close ties between the two countries. As always, many questions came from the audience, and these discussions continued in greater depth during the reception that followed.
Although Switzerland’s accession to the EU appears to be a distant prospect, all speakers agreed on the necessity of further strengthening relations. “Switzerland and the EU share common values and cooperate closely,” said Member of the European Parliament Charles Goerens.
The event series “Let’s Talk About Europe!” will continue on 25 February 2026 at the same venue with the topic “Space Security and Hybrid Threats”. The main language will be English, and, as is customary in Luxembourg, questions may also be asked in other languages.
